DIY Festive Felt Dachshund Ornament

Does this sound familiar? Every year you add another ornament or two…..ok admit it, this year it’s five!……to the Christmas tree in honor of your furry best friends. You may even say that Christmas has gone to the dogs, but that’s kinda the idea right? Because our pups are definitely family!

If that’s the case, then oh my, these DIY Festive Felt Dachshund Ornaments are just SO CUTE! Not just cute but ridiculously EASY to make…especially when you use our downloadable pattern below. (Or with a little modification, it’s possible to customize this one depending on the breed of dog that you want.)

Let’s dive right in with a little tutorial on how to stitch your own doggie felt ornament this holiday.

You’ll need…

  • Wool blend felt (light and dark brown, red and green)
  • Embroidery floss (brown, black and red) and needle
  • 2 small black beads
  • 6 small red beads
  • Poly-fill stuffing
  • Small piece of ribbon (about 4 inches long)
  • Chopstick or knitting needle
  • Fabric glue or hot glue
  • Scissors
  • Chalk, watercolor pencil or white crayon

Step 1

Download and print our (free) dachshund silhouette template onto a piece of paper and cut out all the shapes.

TIP: If you’d like to make a felt ornament for a different dog breed, do a Google search for dog silhouettes in the breed of your choice. Find the one you like, print and cut it out and use it as a template for the body. Then adjust the shape of the ears and sweater shapes from our free download to use with your preferred breed.

Step 2

Trace all the paper pieces onto felt using chalk or a white crayon. (You can use ink, but it can bleed on felt, so be careful!) Then cut all the felt shapes out with sharp scissors.

Step 3

Stitch the two body pieces together, leaving a small opening at the tummy. (This is where you’ll stuff your pup.) We used a simple blanket stitch, which gives the edge a really nice finish, but you can also use a running stitch if you prefer. As you sew, do your best to evenly space the stitches and try not to pull the thread too tight.

Step 4

Stuff the pup’s body with a tiny bit of polly-fill through the tummy opening. Gently use a chopstick or knitting needle to push the stuffing into the head and feet. Then stitch the opening closed.

Step 5

Attach the top of the ears only to each side of the head using a small dab of glue, so they can flop around. (Or if you’re ambitious, you can sew the ears on instead.)

Step 6

Make a loop with the ribbon and attach it to the base of the pup’s neck with a small dab of glue.

Step 7

Time to make to make the sweater!

Using glue, attach the holly pieces to each half of the sweater.

Then, use some red thread to attach three red beads for holly berries on each side of the sweater. (If you don’t have any red beads on hand, you can make french knots with the thread instead.)

Finally, glue the sweater halves and press in place onto the pup’s body.

Step 8

Using black thread, stitch a nose onto the face and sew two small black beads for the eyes.

Isn’t this just the most adorable felt dog you have ever seen? And if you are feeling crafty, why not make two, three or more! These beautifully handcrafted ornaments will add whimsy and charm to your tree year after year. So versatile, you can also add them to a wreath, hang them from your mantel, or use them to decorate a gift box for your favorite dog-lover.

Here’s wishing you all a cheery canine Christmas! Aroo!
